Abdul Basit Muhammad Abdul Samad was an Egyptian reciter of the Holy Quran. He was born in 1927. He had a family of three children.

Abdul Basit was best known for his melodious recitation. He also served his nation as Imam and Sheikh.

Throughout his life, from 1927 to 1988, Abdul Basit won different competitions. In 1970, he won three competitions of world’s qira’at of the Holy Quran.

Having earned fame as reciter, Abdul Basit was honored with respective titles, including The Golden Throat, Voice of Heaven, and Voice of Mecca.

Abdul Basit grew up in his village in Egypt. He was bright in his childhood. At the age of 10, he learned and memorized Quran in different styles, making him one of the brightest candidates of his times.

Abdul Basit from his early age, attended local mosques and madrassas during the Holy month of Ramadan. People used to like Abdul Basit recitation during the prayer of Taraweh in Ramadan. Having said that, he started attending local institutions at the age of 14. Among successors of his time, it was the honor that led him achieve more with the passage of time.

From his childhood, Abdul Basit had a passion for recitation. He used to listen to the radio recitation of the well known reciter, Muhammad Rifat.

In 1950, Abdul Basit travelled to Cairo and attended recitation conferences. Muslims loved to hear Abdul Basit reciting the Holy Quran. Several times, the audience requested for extending recitation duration.

Abdul Basit also travelled to attend national and international recitation gatherings. Not only his country, but also traveled to Pakistan, Europe, and United States. In this regard, Abdul Basit recited the Holy Quran at Badshahi Masjid Lahore, Pakistan. Abdul Basit Muhammad Abdul Samad also produced commercially recorded audio tapes of his recitations.

Abdul Basit passed away on November 30, 1988. In last days, he was admitted in the hospital. His son, Yasir also became a Qari, following the tradition of his great Father.
